On Sunday morning, 32 churches of Pittsburgh Presbytery will welcome General Assembly participants to join them in worship.

“As Presbyterians, we celebrate our unity through our heritage and polity and, ultimately, through our theological underpinnings,” said the Rev. Ted Martin, pastor at Hampton United Presbyterian Church in Gibsonia and a member of the COLA worship committee. “This Sunday represents a dynamic and real expression of our church seeking to follow Christ’s invitation for us to live as one around his table.”

The participating churches represent a cross-section of Pittsburgh Presbytery’s ministries. Communities in Pittsburgh, often demarcated by their relationship to the area’s three rivers, are well known for their ethnic history and cultural flavor, The area’s Presbyterian churches reflect this rich diversity. On Sunday, some assembly participants will worship in East Liberty’s Gothic-style cathedral and hear a special commissioned anthem featuring joint choirs and the Pittsburgh Symphony brass. Others will worship in Grace Memorial, the oldest Black African American congregation west of the Allegheny Mountains. Still others will join the new Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community in a converted bar on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

“Our churches experience worship in many different ways, and Sunday provides an opportunity to glean new ideas as we nurture one other in faith,” remarked Martin.

As of Friday evening, the following churches still had space to accommodate assembly guests. Transportation will leave the convention center at appointed times on Sunday morning. After worship, participating churches will host their guests for lunch, then return them to the convention center by 1:00 p.m.

Assembly goers are encouraged to sign-up to attend these worship services at the registration desk.
