Walk with Larissa Kwong Abazia, Vice Moderator of the 221st General Assembly, as she lives through cancer. This and other reflections will appear on the web page "Each New Day."

I’m having surgery today. As someone who never walked into the emergency room as a child and was admitted for the first time to a hospital when I gave birth to my son, the thought of today’s procedure is both daunting and yet unfamiliar. I trust my medical team and know that I am in extremely capable hands.

I’ve also undergone a lot of transitions in the midst of this upcoming health step. My family and I have moved to a new home, my son started at a new school, and I’ve begun work in a new position. I left my beloved congregation in Queens, New York, to find a bit more balance as I navigate my cancer diagnosis. It’s affected not only myself, but also those around me in ways that were expected and unexpected. It’s been a crazy month, but we are certainly in the right place for us to be strong and supportive of each other.

I covet your thoughts and prayers in this time. Not only for my own surgery, but also for all of those who will support and care for me. I am blessed to have wonderful family, friends, and co-workers who have “rallied” to make my recovery smooth. Though many of you are far away, I feel lifted up by your regular prayers for my health. I know that I don’t go on this journey alone.
