The National Council of Churches is pleased to welcome the Reverend Tammy Wiens as the director of Christian education and faith formation. Wiens will begin in this new position on February 1, 2018.

Wiens comes to us after a year of ministry in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) national office as associate for Christian formation. In this capacity she nurtured, equipped, and inspired Christian educators, campus pastors, and spiritual leaders through web resources, curriculum development, workshops, and mentoring.

In 2016–17, Tammy served as the project administrator for the Committee on Uniform Series (CUS). Prior to this time, Tammy was associate for curriculum development for Congregational Ministries Publishing (2001–2007) and associate for spiritual formation (2007–2010), both positions in the denominational headquarters of the PC(USA). During her tenure in curriculum publishing, Tammy edited The Present Word, based on the Uniform Lessons outlines.

She regularly represented the PC(USA) at the CUS annual meetings and served for two years on the CUS Scope and Sequence committee that developed outlines for the 2010–2016 lessons series. Tammy has experience in both church and higher education administration and has pastored churches in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

In May 2014, Tammy completed her Ph.D. in Christian education and congregational studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Both her achievements in the classroom and her field experiences in Christian education and discipleship uniquely qualify Tammy to direct the NCC’s work and ministry related to the Committee on Uniform Series (CUS) and the Christian Education and Faith Formation Convening Table.

Her first priority will be leading the CUS Executive Committee in its preparations for the annual meeting, which will take place March 14–17 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Wiens’ arrival at the NCC coincides with the revival of Friendship Press, the publishing arm of the NCC and the election of the Reverend Joseph Crockett to the position of chief executive officer. Crockett will be overseeing the publishing ventures of Friendship Press. He brings many years of experience to this vital endeavor.
